5 things to do this half term

February half term is almost here, and with Guernsey’s ever-changing weather, we all need plenty of ways to keep the kids entertained. From exciting outings to creative indoor fun, here are our top five things to do with children this half-term.

1. Catch a train

The Petit Train is rolling out a fantastic lineup of family-friendly events, offering something for everyone. Little ones can enjoy the Toddler Train, a fun-filled nursery rhyme singalong, while music lovers can belt out their favourite tunes during the Singalong Train or the Taylor Swift Special for all the Swifties out there. For a bigger adventure, hop on board for a trip to Oaty & Joey’s Playbarn or catch a screening of IF at Beau Cinema. All trips depart from Albert Pier.

2. Head to the library

The Guille-Allès Library Children’s Library, nestled in the heart of town, is a magical space designed to spark curiosity and imagination. With hidden reading nooks, raised walkways, and even staircases built just for little legs, it’s a wonderland for young book lovers. Home to over 15,000 books, the library also offers so much more than reading.

There’s free events taking place at the library this half term, all of which are completely free though some do require booking to secure a space. You can choose from Fish Bowl Paper Craft, Little Puffin Signing, Board Games Day, Chatterbooks Book Club and World Book Day Costume Making.

For children who love tech and creativity, the Fab Lab is a must-visit, offering access to 3D printing, laser cutting, and design software, all guided by expert staff. Kids can also explore the library’s computer suite, equipped with free internet access and tools for school projects. With endless opportunities to learn, play, and create, the Library is the perfect spot for some half term fun, whatever the weather. Check out their website here for more details.

3. Visit the museum

The Guernsey Museum at Candie is a fantastic place for a family visit, offering a mix of history, hands-on activities, and creative play. The Discovery Room is a dedicated space for children, packed with fun things to explore, including the Time Warp area, which transforms each year to bring history to life. Kids can also enjoy games, colouring, a Punch and Judy puppet theatre, a sensory wall full of buttons and switches, and the intriguing Cabinet of Curiosities, which showcases fascinating objects like a lock of Victor Hugo’s hair, Inuit snowshoes, and even a mummified hand. This year the Time Warp is based on the painting Tree of Life by Peter Le Vasseur as 2025 marks 25 years since it was commissioned by the museum.

While at Candie Gardens, why not take the short walk to Victoria Tower? Climb the 99 steps to the top for breathtaking views over St Peter Port and beyond. You can even collect the key from the museum reception to unlock the tower’s entrance, making it a real adventure for kids.

The Guernsey Museum at Candie is open daily 10am-4pm, with Café Victoria on-site for refreshments. Admission is £7 for adults, £2 for children under 18, and free for under 7s. For unlimited visits, consider a Discovery Pass (£24), giving a whole year of free entry.

4. Go golfing

For a fun-filled family day out, golfing is a fantastic option, with two great venues offering mini-golf and more for all ages.

Pirate Bay Adventure Golf at Golf19 is a 12-hole pirate-themed course filled with waterfalls, shipwrecks, and tricky obstacles, perfect for some friendly family competition. If you want to take your golfing experience up a notch, head over to the driving range, where kids and adults alike can have a go at hitting balls down the range, with clubs available to borrow. After all that action, refuel with a meal at 19 Bar & Grill, located upstairs, offering delicious food in a relaxed setting with stunning views over the course.

For more putting fun, Oatlands Mini Golf offers an 18-hole course with quirky holes and tricky angles to test your skills. Once you’ve finished, there’s plenty more to explore at Oatlands Village, including shops, restaurant, and the fantastic Oaty & Joey’s Playbarn.

Whether you’re perfecting your swing on the driving range, navigating pirate obstacles, or taking on a mini-golf challenge, these courses provide great family fun for all ages.

5. Bubbles on the beach

One of the most magical (and budget friendly) activities for kids is making giant bubbles on the beach. With just a simple homemade bubble mix and some DIY wands, you can create huge, shimmering bubbles that float across the sand, reflecting the colours of the sky. It’s a great way to get creative outdoors, and little ones will love chasing and popping the bubbles as they drift away. For tips on how to make the perfect bubble solution and wands, check out our Gigantic Bubbles blog.

If bubbles aren’t your thing, there’s still plenty to do on Guernsey’s beautiful beaches. Try sea glass hunting, where kids can search for smooth, colourful pieces of glass polished by the waves—check out our Sea Glass Hunting blog for the best spots to find these ocean treasures. Or why not build a sandcastle, paddle in the shallows, or go rock pooling to see what sea creatures you can find?

Whatever the weather, a trip to the beach offers endless fun for families – just make sure you wrap up warm and embrace the adventure!

Please always check the Guernsey tide table before heading to the beach.
