World Book Day 2026

World Book Day 2026 will be celebrated in primary schools across the island on Thursday 5 March, no doubt featuring costumes and reading initiatives galore. So we’ve pulled together some additional celebrations we’ve found taking place…

Starting off strong, IslandFamilies is giving away a bundle of books worth £40 for one lucky child. You can enter by going to our Facebook page and letting us know; if you’re only allowed to read ONE children’s book forever, what are you choosing?

The lovely Laurel from Little Champs, is giving away copies of her books in Sausmarez Park. There will be two copies of both Emily Wins the Race and Sonny’s Slam Dunk there to be found. Get yourselves out in the fresh air for a play and a hunt, and you might be taking home a new book for bedtime!

Guille-Alles Library is running a workshop where you can design and create your own bookmark. Explore the basics of sublimation printing and Canva software, and learn how to prepare artwork for sublimation and use heat presses safely, finishing the session with a custom bookmark to take home. Booking is essential and the workshop is £10 per person. Open to everyone age 9+.

The library is also hosting an island-wide reading event, Stop, Drop and Read. You can take part at midday on Thursday 5 March: Stop what you’re doing, drop everything, and read for 15 minutes. Just a few minutes of reading can help reduce stress and improve your sense of wellbeing.

Families are invited to drop in, browse, and choose from over 1,000 children’s books, all in good condition and suitable for ages 0 to 18. Every child attending will be able to select a book to take home and keep completely free of charge. The collection includes picture books, early readers, chapter books, and young adult titles, ensuring that children of all ages and interests can find something that inspires them.
